IAEA cooperation projects

In compliance with the IAEA European Regional Programme for Technical Cooperation 2024–2025, and together with the Lithuanian Ministry of Energy and the Radiation Protection Centre, VATESI coordinated the participation of Lithuanian experts in the following regional technical cooperation projects on nuclear safety and energy:

• RER0048 – Enhancing National Legal Frameworks;
• RER0049 – Enhancing the Capacities of Educational Insti¬tutions for the Sustainable use of Nuclear Technologies;
• RER2019 – Enhancing Capacity for the Subsequent Operation of Nuclear Power Plants Beyond their Existing Long-Term Operation Programmes;
• RER9148 – Strengthening the Regulatory Infrastructure for Radiation Safety;
• RER9149 – Improving the Radiation Protection of Wor¬kers Occupationally Exposed to Ionising Radiation;
• RER9151 – Updating and Harmonising Emergency Pre¬paredness and Response Plans;
• RER9154 – Enhancing the Implementation of Integrated Programmes for the Safe Management of Radioactive Waste;
• RER9158 – Strengthening the Regulatory Infrastructure for Radiation Safety;
• RER9160 – Strengthening Capabilities on Safety Asses¬sment and Risk Informed Decision Making for Severe Accidents and Off Site Consequences;
• RER9161 – Strengthening Regional Capabilities for Effective Preparedness and Response to a Nuclear or Radiological Emergency;
• RER9162 – Strengthening Education and Training Infrastructure in Radiation Protection;
• RER9164 – Building Capacity for Radioactive Waste Management.

In 2025, VATESI employees attended 23 events held under IAEA international and regional projects: workshops, conferences, technical meetings, and training courses. These events gave the VATESI employees the opportunity to learn about regulatory requirements and good practices in the areas of nuclear safety, radiation protection and physical security, as well as to exchange professional experience with international counterparts. 

The implementation of the 2022–2025 IAEA Technical Cooperation National Project LIT9020 “Enhancing National Capabilities for Decommissioning and Radioactive Waste Management, Safety Assessment, Oversight, Licensing and Emergency Preparedness” was continued. In 2025, nine VATESI employees improved their expertise during research visits, conferences, seminars and workshops held within the framework of the IAEA national project. The IAEA support through national projects helps Lithuanian nuclear safety professionals to improve their emergency preparedness, technical knowledge on decommissioning and radioactive waste management, to know the most up-to-date international nuclear safety requirements and learn about best practices in other countries. Project funds were also used to finance the translation of documents into English and to procure ventilation equipment for the VATESI Emergency Operations Centre.
