Lighting the candles of unity, remembrance and victory
On the morning of 13 January 2026, the employees of the State Nuclear Power Safety Inspectorate joined the civic initiative "Light of Victory" and lit candles of unity and remembrance in the windows of their homes and offices to commemorate Freedom Defenders' Day.
January 13 is one of the most significant dates in Lithuanian history, marking the events of 1991 when the people of Lithuania bravely stood up to defend their freedom and independence. Despite the threat of the Soviet army, thousands of citizens gathered near strategic objects, and during the bloody events that took place in Vilnius that night, 14 defenders of freedom were killed and hundreds of people were injured.
The lit candles symbolize the light of defended freedom, the bonfires that warmed the defenders of freedom on that fateful night, the victory over brutal force, and our unity.
