State Enterprise Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant is requesting permission to dismantle the unused chemical water purification facilities located next to Unit 2
October 22, 2026 State Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (VATESI) accepted for review a request from the State Enterprise Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant to issue a permit to dismantle and decontaminate the unused chemical water purification facilities located next to Unit 2.
VATESI specialists will make a decision on whether to grant a permit after reviewing and evaluating the documents substantiating the application within 3 months after receiving the properly completed documents and the required information.
The reactors’ main circulation circuit and other water purification facilities, filtration and other related equipment, located next to Unit 2 will be dismantled and decontaminated upon receipt of a permit.
Under current legal framework, once VATESI has issued a general license to carry out decommissioning activities, specific dismantling work at the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant may be performed only after the safety of these works has been substantiated in the decontamination and dismantling projects and their safety analysis reports and the relevant permits have been obtained.
