SE Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant requests revocation of license to decommission Maišiagala radioactive waste storage facility
On January 14, 2026, the State Nuclear Power Safety Inspectorate (VATESI) accepted for evaluation a request from the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant to revoke its license to decommission the Maišiagala radioactive waste storage facility.
The decision on revoking the license will be made by VATESI specialists after reviewing and evaluating the documents for the application, but no later than within 3 months of receiving the properly completed document and the required information.
VATESI specialists will evaluate whether the former radioactive waste storage facility has been properly dismantled, its site has been properly cleaned up and whether the decommissioning of the storage facility has been completed in accordance with the established safety requirements.
Maišiagala radioactive waste storage facility was settled in the Bartkuškis Forest in the Širvintos district in to store radioactive waste collected by industrial enterprises, medical and scientific institutions between 1963 and 1989.
The Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant had installed appropriate equipment for retreaving radioactive waste from the storage facility and dismantling contaminated structures of storage facility. Radioactive waste was retrieved from the storage facility vault and contaminated structures were dismantled. All radioactive waste retrieved from the vault and generated during decommissioning was transported to the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant radioactive waste management facilities in the Visaginas municipality for further storage and disposal.
