The Seventh Lithuanian National Report under the Joint Convention submitted to the IAEA

On 9 August 2024, State Nuclear Power Safety Inspectorate (VATESI) submitted the Seventh Lithuanian National Report under the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management.

Report provides updated information regarding new radioactive waste management facilities in operation, the management of radioactive waste and spent fuel, and safety improvement measures, as well as developments in the areas of spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste management over the last four years.

Over the 2020-2024 period:
- All spent nuclear fuel, including mechanically damaged spent nuclear fuel, has been safely loaded in special containers and transported to the storage facility;
- The fuel pools of both power units have been cleaned of debris and the water in them has been treated;
- The Solid Waste Management and Storage Facility was put into industrial operation;
- Two campaigns for the disposal of very low-level waste have been carried out as part of the repository commissioning programme;
- The deep geological repository project is ongoing, with geological studies being carried out in the country to find a suitable geological structure for the repository;
- Dismantling of equipment of power units and initial treatment of radioactive waste continue;
- Preparations for dismantling of reactor equipment - evaluation of options for dismantling reactor equipment.

The report prepared jointly with the Ministry of Energy, Ministry of the Environment, Radiation Protection Centre, Fire and Rescue Department and SE Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant.

After submitting national reports, the review process starts. During this review, Lithuania will answer questions raised by other contracting parties, as well as will submit questions to other contracting parties’ reports. Contracting parties will discuss all peer-review results at a Review Meeting in March 2025.
