IAEA evaluates Lithuania's experience in technical cooperation projects
On January 20, VATESI hosted Rahel Kahlert, Senior Review Officer of the Internal Oversight Service of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), together with technical expert Katherine Moshonas Cole. The purpose of the visit was to discuss practical aspects of VATESI's participation in IAEA technical cooperation projects, experience, and current expectations.
The meeting focused on assessing the effectiveness and efficiency of IAEA technical cooperation projects in the field of decommissioning.
During their visit to Lithuania, IAEA representatives meet other institutions and organizations whose specialists are involved in the projects: Ministry of Energy, Radiation Protection Centre, Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant and Lithuanian Energy Institute.
The visit to Lithuania and meetings with project partners is part of an independent IAEA evaluation of its activities related to support for nuclear power plant decommissioning and environmental remediation. Such reviews are conducted regularly to identify member countries' expectations and provide recommendations to the IAEA so that it can further strengthen its cooperation with member states and ensure that their needs are met in a timely, effective, and efficient manner.
The IAEA's technical cooperation program is designed to help member countries strengthen and maintain the capabilities necessary to ensure the safe use of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes and thus contribute to the country's balanced and sustainable development.
